"BETWEEN"
ENERGY SPACES
...is
a project with visual artist Bettina
Schuelke. I co-developed the concept and produced the soundtrack
(an electronic score in five parts) and moving images. The BETWEEN
exhibits in Bruxelles and Antwerp were organized by Ad!dictlab.com.
My interactive projections - which is like playing colors and light
on a keyboard- are powered by arkaos
Visual Technologies.
Exhibitions:
THE TRUE NATURE OF DESIGN, 18/10- 20/10/03 at the Design Center
De Winkelhaak, Antwerpen,
Belgium.
Ad!dict
Creative Lab, 25/09/03- 25/11/03 Barthelemylaan 20/ 22. Bruxelles,
Belgium in cooperation with PANTONE.
1)
What are BETWEENs?
They
are art objects between worlds. Their appearance ranges from camouflage
to gaudy, from pastel to iridescent. Their organic shapes create
their own floating space. Free of gravity, they are messengers between
different realities.
2)
Details
Light,
transparent, dancing in constant motion to a subtle choreography
of colorful rays, moving images and music, the BETWEENs are up to
six meters tall with a fossile, jurassic and archaic look and feel.
The surfaces of transparent fabrics appear like skins of materialized
energy beings. Shadow and light, reflections of metallic pigments
and different translucent layers of fabric are opening spaces for
the viewer. Inspiring and reflective views into and through the
Betweens unveil insights and unlock spatial and spiritual dimensions.
Every Between shares its own tale with us in shape, color, light,
multimedia projections and sound. The multimedia performance encompasses
structures, sound, light, space and movement. It combines the analog
with the digital realm, adding another dimension for the visitors.
In this light, the artists offer their unique interpretation of
Plato's "Allegory of the Cave". For the exhibitions in Bruxelles
and Antwerp, Bettina Schuelke built two BETWEEN objects, one called
"3m GREEN" (Brussels) and one called "5m RED" (Antwerp).
On
a road trip through Belgium and France in the summer of 03, Schuelke
and Barth photographed and filmed BETWEEN objects in different environments.
Aspects such as shadow and light, color, motion and stillness, form
and abstraction, modes of perception, natural and man-made worlds
were centerpieces of their analytical research and creative expression.
Their documentary lead them to abandoned factory halls, the forests
of the Alsace, the beaches of the Bretagne and the Eiffel Tower
in Paris. In these different settings, BETWEENs were filmed in interaction
with space and surroundings. With this, another layer was added
to the concept. A concept which transcends the object- oriented
into the relation- oriented state of perception, exploring permutating
context- relations between object, viewer and environment in outside
and inside worlds. The footage material was used as basis for new
works: Large format pictures and paintings, short movies, animations
and sound, all being presented at the exhibitions. This huge collection
of material is permanently building the book/ catalog and DVD. The
concept of BETWEEN and the images are the basis for the book/ catalogue.
The soundtrack, short movies, animations and the impressions on
the road are the cornerstones of the DVD. Book/ catalogue and DVD
are again basis for more creative works and research on institutions
and museums, such as the "Mediakeskus LUME" in Helsinki, Finland.
